IUI – INTRA-UTERINE INSEMINATION

Intra-Uterine Insemination (IUI) is a fertility procedure where specially prepared sperm are directly inserted into a woman's uterus using a catheter after careful ovulation monitoring or induction. This treatment is often recommended for issues like poor sperm motility or unexplained infertility.

When is IUI recommended?

IUI may be advised for milder infertility cases, where enhancing the interaction between sperm and egg can lead to successful fertilization.

  • If the male partner has low sperm count, decreased sperm motility, or abnormalities in sperm morphology (shape), IUI can help by bypassing some of the barriers that sperm face in reaching and fertilizing the egg.

  • When the male partner has difficulty sustaining an erection or ejaculating semen into the vagina due to conditions like retrograde ejaculation or erectile dysfunction

  • Cervical mucus plays a crucial role in fertility as it helps sperm travel through the cervix and into the uterus and fallopian tubes to reach the egg for fertilization. In case woman is not producing enough mucus or when mucus is too thick, resisting sperm motility, IUI can be done to bypass the cervix and place the mucus directly into uterus

  • When a couple has been trying to conceive without using protection for a significant period of time without success and no specific cause for infertility has been detected in the fertility tests, IUI may be recommended as first resort.

  • Same sex women couples or a woman without a male partner may choose donor sperm to conceive using IUI treatment. The donor sperm used is from ART certified and registered sperm which has been tested for quality.

How IUI Operates

IUI treatment begins with a thorough assessment of the couple’s fertility. Based on the results, the doctor creates a customized treatment plan.

Once IUI is selected, the doctor and counselor will develop a pre-treatment fitness plan considering factors like weight, thyroid levels, and other conditions. Through regular blood tests and ultrasound scans, the maturity of follicles is monitored to determine the optimal time for insemination. After inducing egg release, high-quality sperm is placed into the uterus using a sterile catheter.

Consultation with Doctor

The doctor will discuss your concerns, conception history, and medical background, then suggest necessary tests.

INFERTILITY TESTS

Based on the preliminary assessment, doctor may recommend various tests. Majorly following tests are recommended-

  1. Blood tests

  2. Male fertility testing, including semen analysis

  3. Ultrasound Scan

  4. Infectious disease screening

  5. Uterine evaluation

TREATMENT PLAN

After looking at the test results, Doctor will pick the right treatment for you and discuss important steps of treatment. In house counsellor will take you through the treatment cost structure.

Infertility Assessment

Before starting the treatment, the nature and severity of infertility are evaluated through three steps:

IUI Procedure

After the assessment is done and patient is declared medically fit to undergo the treatment, IUI procedure will begin

Checking for Pregnancy

Around 10-14 days after timed intercourse, a pregnancy test is performed to confirm if implantation occurred and pregnancy has begun. If positive, prenatal care starts to monitor the pregnancy.

STEP 1

STEP 2

STEP 3

Ovulation Stimulation

Medications are used to stimulate ovulation, ensuring the maturity of follicles.

Monitoring

Ovulation is monitored using ultrasound scans of the endometrium and frequent blood tests to measure hormone levels and determine the best time for ovulation.

Egg Release

When follicles are mature, an hCG injection induces egg release.

Sperm Collection

The male partner provides a sperm sample.

Sperm Selection

The sperm sample is processed in the lab to separate and concentrate the motile sperm.

Insemination

The prepared sperm is placed into the uterus using a sterile catheter after egg release. The process is quick and simple.
